Smiling Face of Young Student  is typical of the atmosphere at Chenta Music School.

When asked about the difficulty and the reward of learning piano, Chenta told us:

'The Piano, known as The King of Instruments, is one of the most popular musical instruments sought by people to play. It is quite difficult to play piano because the pupil has to learn to read two staves of music at the same time. The upper stave is written in The Treble Clef for right hand and the lower stave is written in the Bass Clef for left hand.

To play any musical instrument - and that includes the voice - the pupil has to be prepared to set aside regular practice times to devote to their instrument. This is so very important for learning the piano. To be honest, a pupil would probably have to spend double the time learning the piano than they would on another instrument. However, like me, there are many people who are happy to spend lots of their spare time practising and playing their favourite instrument. Being able to play pieces that you love is the reward for all the time devoted to practise.'

At Chenta Music School, pupils have the option of playing piano or keyboard as a hobby or they can sit exams. The exams that pupils sit are with London College Of Music. London College of Music exams are recognised internationally and there are two categories that a pupil can choose from. The first is the grade exam, in which one can choose scales or a study to be played and three pieces are selected. The exam candidate also sits aural and sight-reading tests. The second option is to omit the scales / study and the aural and sight-reading tests and the pupil instead studies four pieces of a set standard and performs these only.

Pupils can use their exam pieces and / or other pieces to perform in their practical exams for the Junior and Leaving Certificates. Quite a number of Junior and Leaving Certificate pupils at Chenta Music School have successfully performed for their practical music exams.

Performance is encouraged by Chenta and she arranges for the pupils to perform in a concert once a year, usually at Easter or at the end of school year. This concert takes place annually at Triskel Arts Centre, where family, friends and other pupils get to hear the pupils' recital. Throughout the year, the keyboard pupils perform in the local libraries or local hospitals or occasionally, on Paul Street Plaza.

Chenta loves her music to such an extent that at the end of a hard weeks work at Chenta Music School, for relaxation, she practices!  She is currently advancing her own studies under the watchful eye of Dilia Bryar who studied in the Moscow Conservatory.

Pupils of all ages are welcome at Chenta Music School. The youngest pupil at the moment is nearly seven. There are a number of adults learning piano or keyboard and some of them are preparing for exams.

Piano pupils are taught individually and keyboard pupils are taught either individually or in small groups. One of the advantages of playing in the small groups is that a shy pupil or a pupil who is nervous can experience performance without having to play solo. They gain confidence in this way and in the meantime playing in a group is good fun too. There are about eight small groups in the school at the present time.
